What is Power-Based Violence

Power-based violence refers to any form of violence or abuse where the perpetrator uses power, control, or intimidation to harm another person. It can manifest in various ways, including physical, emotional, psychological, sexual, or economic abuse. The core element is the imbalance of power, where the perpetrator exerts dominance over the victim to manipulate or control them.

Common types of power-based violence include:

  • Domestic violence: Abuse within intimate relationships.
  • Sexual violence: Non-consensual sexual acts or harassment.
  • Stalking: Repeated, unwanted attention that causes fear.
  • Human trafficking: Exploitation through force, fraud, or coercion.

Power-based violence can happen in personal relationships, workplaces, schools, and communities. Efforts to prevent it often focus on promoting healthy relationships, teaching consent, and fostering environments that challenge power imbalances.
