Social & Behavioral Sciences: Books

Search for Books

Use the Library Catalog to find books on social science topics. The Library Catalog provides access to the collections of St. Johns River State College. When you are searching for resources, the catalog will tell you what is on our shelves in both the physical and online libraries, the campus location, availability, and the call number of the item. You also have access to materials in the Florida College System libraries. You can search for materials here by using the Advanced Search option.

Collection

A collection has been created that can serve as a starting point in your research. The items that have been selected for this collection are based on both popularity and scholar recommendations. These resources focus on the seven major branches of social science - history, political science, geography, economics, psychology, sociology, and anthropology.

Accessing eBooks

To find an eBook owned by the SJR State Library, search SJR State Library Catalog

1. Type in a title, an author's name, or some keywords that describe the information you're looking for.

2. On the Simple Search screen (the default search), there is no way to specify what you want searched from the suggested modes. Those can be selected on the Advanced Search screen if desired. The link for the Advanced Search screen is available just to the right of the search box. These are the selectable fields :

  • Any Field (keyword) will search for your keywords anywhere they appear in a record.
  • Title will search for your keywords ONLY in the title field of a record.
  • Author/Creator will search for your keywords ONLY in the author's name field of a record.
  • Subject will search for your keywords ONLY in the LC Subject Headings that were assigned to that record. Subject Headings are words or phrases that are consistently used in library catalogs worldwide to describe what an item is about. They do not always use the most popular words to describe things though, so if a Subject Heading search returns 0 results don't quit - do an Anywhere search instead.
  • ISBN searches are useful if you have the ISBN of a book for which you want an exact copy. ISBN searches will not find other editions of the same title, so only use it when you want the exact edition of a book.
  • ISSN searches are like ISBN, but it is looking for periodical titles (journals, magazines, etc.) instead of books. It is not used to find individual articles, just the titles.

3. To limit to only eBooks, find the “Filter by Availability” on the left of the results list, under Tweak Your Results. Select "Available Online."

4. To access an eBook from your results, click on the “Available Online” link in the results list. Then once the item description page pops-up, click on "St. Johns River: Click here to view this eBook. Access is restricted to valid borrowers." link. Valid borrowers include current SJR State students, faculty, staff, and Trustees.
